An enlightened century.
An extraordinary personality.
An astonishing book.

On one of those autumn evenings in Switzerland, the 16-year old Franz Simon Meyer started to write down his memories of the trip to Milan. He was not aware back then that he was about to write one of the most astonishing books of an enlightened century. A book which would during the next 55 years become his trusted companion through a life which was supposed to be one of the happiest – through glittering pleasures, through swooshing vertigos, and through a roaring daily life. In hours of despair, he felt the urge to destroy this book. In these moments, he deemed it to be a monument of pride, of self-praise, worthy of destruction.
However, the book survived him. Until the present day. Since an autumn evening in Switzerland in 1816.

There’s not going to be another book like it in the next 55 years.

Feridun Zaimoglu about this book:
„Ich bin dieser Welt abhanden gekommen und in Meyers Welt eingetaucht – eine entsetzliche, wunderbare, versunkene Welt!“
