Katharina Duwe: Off Space

Exhibition Catalogue

The exhibition OFF SPACE shows pictures from the series “Nature”, “Light Reflections” and “Urban Space”. The works focus on the question of human existence.
Urban life, the built-up space of large metropolises, the experiential space of nocturnal cities and the forms and structures of our civilisation are the breeding ground for the artist’s painterly investigations.

Katharina Duwe is not committed to any realistic method of depiction. She works with fragments and combines details from different realities in such a way that an unreal, often surreal atmosphere is created. The power of her paintings, apart from their aesthetic colourfulness, lies in the “off space”, the space that is opened up beyond the frame of the canvas.

Katharina Duwe, born 1952 in Hamburg, studied art at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg with Hans Thiemann, Kai Sudeck and Werner Bunz.
In 1980 she opened her own studio in Hamburg. Various painting travels took her to Provence, Florence (Villa Romana) and New York. However, she always returned to northern Germany, where, in addition to her artistic work, the contemporary visual artist also held and still holds various teaching positions, e.g. at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung, Hamburg, the Muthesius-Kunsthochschule, Kiel, and the Schlei-Akademie.
Her work now spans a period of more than three decades. Her works are represented in numerous private and public collections, including the Kiel Ministry of the Interior, Kunsthalle Emden (Henri and Eske Nannen Foundation), Kulturstiftung Stormarn, and the Krefeld Art Museum Collection.
Katharina Duwe has received numerous prizes for her works, including the Kirchenfenster Wettbewerb Kiel, Landesschaupreis BBK Schleswig-Holstein and Elysee-Preis Hamburg.
