Peter Schuster

Kiel and the surrounding area

Ein plaudernder Fotobildband mit vielen Rückblicken

When you arrive in Kiel, you feel as though you’re on holiday, yet still at home. Whether you’re strolling along the Kiel Fjord or relaxing on Falckensteiner Beach, you quickly lose track of time. But Kiel has more to offer than the sound of the sea, ‘Lütt un Lütt’ and fish rolls in your hand. Every June, the people of Kiel cast aside their typical North German reserve and invite everyone to Northern Europe’s biggest folk festival. Kiel Week celebrates sailing and the diversity of all people and cultures. For these two weeks, the whole world feels at home here. But even once the stages have been taken down, there’s plenty to discover: the rural surroundings with their flora and fauna, the old university and the big-city atmosphere that always tempts you to come back for another visit. Join the author Peter Schuster on his chatty journey through Kiel: a city that has seen many visitors yet never quite lets you go.

Peter Schuster, born in 1940, was born and raised in Kiel. After working as a retail salesman and serving in the navy, he gained his first experience in journalism and wrote photographic travel reports. His passion for classic photography was sparked in the 1960s and 70s by the veteran photographer ‘Fiete’ Magnussen; his passion for writing was kindled by the journalist and author Bruno Bock (both of the Kieler Nachrichten). This is how Schuster found his professional path into public relations and publishing. He is the author of several illustrated books focusing on Schleswig-Holstein; he has also contributed photographs to other publications. He recognised the many charming aspects of his home town, Kiel, at an early stage and has retained his keen eye for people, landscapes and urban changes to this day. Schuster lives near Kiel and is preparing to hand over his extensive photographic archive to charitable organisations.
