Aufbruch in eine neue Ära: Die minimalinvasive Chirurgie an der Kieler Frauenklinik.
In the early 1990s, the introduction of minimally invasive surgical techniques led to a profound transformation in surgical treatment methods across all surgical disciplines in medicine. The minimally invasive revolution in surgery took place in a very short space of time and was met with great enthusiasm by the general public.
This sudden upheaval was preceded by a long period of development, the main centre of which was the University Women’s Hospital in Kiel.
In this book, contemporary witnesses who were actively involved in this development have their say. Their accounts provide insights into the day-to-day clinical routine of the 1970s and 1980s, in which these innovative processes were embedded. They discuss the technical and medical barriers that had to be overcome, as well as the scientific controversies and personal conflicts that accompanied this development. At the centre of all these accounts is Kurt Semm (1927–2003), the then Chief Physician at the University Women’s Clinic in Kiel. He is now regarded as the father of minimally invasive surgery.
